Background of the study
Government subsidies are a critical tool for boosting agricultural productivity, particularly in areas where farming is the predominant livelihood. In Epe Local Government Area, Lagos State, subsidies are provided to support farmers by reducing production costs, increasing access to quality inputs, and encouraging the adoption of modern agricultural technologies (Adebayo, 2023). Historically, the agricultural sector in Epe has been hindered by challenges such as fluctuating market prices, limited access to credit, and poor infrastructure. Subsidies aim to alleviate these issues by enabling farmers to invest in improved seeds, fertilizers, and mechanization, thereby enhancing crop yields and overall productivity (Olaoye, 2024). However, concerns exist regarding the efficiency of subsidy distribution and the risk of dependency on government support. Bureaucratic delays and misallocation of funds sometimes undermine the intended benefits. This study evaluates the impact of government subsidies on agricultural productivity in Epe by analyzing both the direct benefits and potential drawbacks. The research will assess the effectiveness of current subsidy programs and propose measures to optimize resource allocation and ensure sustainable agricultural growth.

Statement of the problem
Despite government subsidies aimed at boosting agricultural productivity in Epe, many farmers still face significant challenges. Delays in disbursement, misallocation of funds, and dependency issues have led to suboptimal improvements in crop yield and income (Adebayo, 2023). Moreover, inefficiencies in subsidy management and distribution often result in funds not reaching the intended beneficiaries, further limiting the positive impact on agricultural productivity (Olaoye, 2024). These challenges create uncertainty among farmers and hinder long-term investments in modern farming technologies. This study seeks to investigate these issues and propose effective solutions to improve the efficiency of subsidy programs, ensuring that they contribute meaningfully to agricultural growth and rural development in Epe.

Objectives of the study (3):

  1. To assess the impact of government subsidies on agricultural productivity in Epe.

  2. To identify challenges in subsidy implementation and management.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving subsidy effectiveness.

Research questions (3):

  1. How do government subsidies affect agricultural productivity in Epe?

  2. What challenges affect the effective distribution of subsidies?

  3. What measures can optimize subsidy programs to enhance agricultural output?

Research Hypotheses (3):

  1. Government subsidies significantly increase agricultural productivity.

  2. Inefficient subsidy management negatively impacts productivity.

  3. Policy reforms in subsidy allocation will improve agricultural outcomes.

Significance of the study
This study examines the role of government subsidies in driving agricultural productivity in Epe. Its findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers and agricultural stakeholders on how to enhance subsidy management and ensure that financial support leads to sustainable increases in farm output. By addressing the challenges in subsidy distribution, the study aims to contribute to improved food security and rural economic growth (Adebayo, 2023; Olaoye, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing the impact of government subsidies on agricultural productivity in Epe Local Government Area, focusing on subsidy management and its outcomes on farming practices.

Definitions of terms (3):

  1. Government Subsidies: Financial assistance provided by the government to support specific sectors.

  2. Agricultural Productivity: The output of agricultural produce relative to input resources.

  3. Food Security: The availability and accessibility of sufficient, nutritious food.
